Dear Door County Coffee Friends,
I generally only write directly to you to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving or Merry Christmas. But in light of what is happening in our world, I feel compelled to write to you today, to pray that you are all safe and to let you know what your Door County Coffee Team is doing up here in Wisconsin.
We voluntarily closed our café and retail store on March 16 to keep our guests and team safe. We’ve instituted additional safety protocols and expanded on our already rigorous GMP procedures (Good Manufacturing Practices, as audited by the USFDA and compliance is widely accepted as the best way to do business, putting product quality first.) We’ve restricted admittance in our facility to our own employees only – any deliveries are dropped off and outside services are suspended. We have daily briefings in small groups to keep our team updated on new procedures and the spirits of our people are generally very good.
Having said all that, we are all uncertain and living in uncharted waters. We love our people and our company and as stewards of our people, we asked ourselves if it is safe to continue operations. We believe it is. Further, we have been made aware by the Department of Homeland Security that food processors (anyone in the food industry) are considered “critical infrastructure”. They have asked us to continue to keep normal operations to ensure the nation’s food supply and stocked shelves. To that end, we believe we have a special responsibility to keep running.
We are roasting, packaging and shipping daily to our grocery partners to keep their shelves full, to our retail and food service partners, and of course to you in your homes. Our website is open 24/7 so you can order from the safety and convenience of your own home. We know how important coffee can be to our lives….it’s never been just a beverage. It’s safe, quiet, comfort at a time when we desperately need it.
Our team takes this responsibility seriously and I am so very proud of them. These trying times truly do bring out the best in us and we truly do and have the best team. We have spoken with each of our teammates to discuss their level of comfort and safety here and and they have made the choice to come to work. We are united in our commitment to roast and ship our coffee as long as it is safe to do so.
We believe in the American people and that we, as a nation, will do all in our power to harness resources to bring a swift end to this virus. We have the best scientists and medical practitioners in the world and thank them for putting themselves in harm's way. We pray that you and your loved ones are safe and look forward to the bright, beautiful day that this is behind us!
Stay strong, good people and God bless,
